STIMULATING THE LEARNING PROCESS OF A CHILD

Ever wondered why some students do not perform up to expectations despite having certain basic things for academic success at their disposal? One of the major reasons for this may be lack of proper stimulation or motivation. Since they say Charity begins at home, this piece shall be targeted towards the motivating and stimulating ventures that can be done at the home front to complement the efforts of the school. Many things can be done by parents to increase their wards’ academic performance through motivation. These propositions include:

  • keeping a good parent-ward relationship where the child is free to express his/her concerns and fears;
  • making the child realize that his/her education is the paramount thing in life;
  • being firm and fair in disciplining the child. Bear it in mind that children need reasonable discipline to be independent and responsible;
  • teaching the child to be responsible at home. Chores and expectations for proper behaviour are ways of developing self-discipline that will be transferred to school-related learning;
  • taking time to do fun things with the child and listening when the child speaks especially about school;
  • doing family activities that encourage learning such as visiting the library, museums or even parks;
  • providing opportunities for successes. Children who feel successful are more likely to try new things;
  • talking to the child about his/her interests and likes;
  • helping the child identify things he/she enjoys and what he/she does well i.e capitalizing on their interests to build learning experiences;
  • Showing real interest in the child's school activities and career interest as well as how school is important to the career goals;
  • praising the child for trying hard and for being successful. It is important for a child to be appreciated when he/she is doing well; and,
  • balancing praise and punishment while helping the child.

Here you have them. Let us motivate and stimulate our children to bring out the best in them. Remember that no child is dull or incapable of learning; some just need a little more of attention and motivation from us. May we all reap the fruits of our labour on our children. Amen.

TEN MAIN DUTIES OF A RESPONSIBLE AND EFFECTIVE FATHER

The word father could be seen either as a noun or as a verb. As a noun, it simply means a male parent; which any seventeen-year-old, even a mad man can be addressed in as much as he can fertilize a woman. But father as a verb is a work, an assignment, a responsibility, a duty and a stewardship of which every male figure who facilitates the coming of human being to the world will give account one day.

The unfortunate and the sad experience of our days clearly show that majority of male figures who tiny tots call daddies are not in the real sense value the concept or what it stands for. Most fathers do not do a thorough study and research on what it takes to be a responsible father; most are accidental or circumstantial fathers; and are unprepared for the role. Even when it seems they are prepared, the preparations are driven by other factors and benefits of marriage not by understanding the duties and responsibilities of being called a father. If a group of daddies are asked to state what they know to be the duties of a responsible father, the best answers you can get from most of them will revolve round some provisions such as provisions of money, shelter, clothings and so on. Indeed, providing for the family is one of the ten main duties of a responsible father. No one who scores one out of ten can be said to have performed a little well at all. Therefore, every father must wake up to their sacred responsibilities if our tomorrow as a family, society and a nation will be better than today.

Below are the ten main duties of an effective and responsible father.

Leadership; Provision; Watching over; Security; Guidance; Mentoring; Good Example; Availability and Listening; Correction; and Coach.

None of these duties is less important. The most important and the first will be dealt with in the following paragraphs.

Leadership is the first requirement and the duty of a responsible father. Father Abraham became the blessing of human race because God could trust his leadership in his family. Even God acknowledged and said of him, “I know Abraham; he will command his household after the will of God.” Can the same be said of you? It has been observed that the successful family, organization, even a nation has one attribute that distinguishes it from the unsuccessful ones; dynamic and effective leadership.

Around the globe, humanity currently faces three extraordinary threats: the threat of annihilation as a result of nuclear accident or war, the threat of a worldwide plague or ecological catastrophe, and a deepening leadership crisis in most of our institutions, the primary of which is the family. Unlike the possibility of a plague or nuclear holocaust, the leadership failure is the most urgent and dangerous of the threats we face today, only because it could not be well recognized and understood.

Leadership is one of the most common characteristics of all the species of the animal kingdom. Whenever any of the species is in a group, a leader often emerges. Father as the leader of a family group determines the direction, the nature and the tempo of family activities. By way of definition, the Chamber’s dictionary defines leadership as follows; to show the way by going first; to proceed; to guide by the hand; to direct; to conduct. Every father should examine himself what kind of leader he is. To know your leadership qualities as a father, we need not look too far. What we need is to examine our household; that is, our children at whatever level they are. The signs of outstanding leadership in a family setting are primarily among the children. These signs are measured by the extent at which the children are morally sound, achieving results and exhibiting goodness in every area of life.

Finally, let it be noted by every father that the society fails when the fathers fail to provide effective leadership roles in individual families.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE RESPONSIBLE DON’T SPOIL THEM!!!

There is a natural responsibility on parents to love, nurture, care for and make their children happy. One of the greatest desires of parents is to see to the well-being of their children. But cautions must be taken in the process of performing such parental functions so as not to over love, over care, over nurture and over-indulge the children. This, if not well handled, may result in spoiling them and interfering with their future maturity, thus reducing their own sense of responsibility and future accomplishment.

Spoiling someone means over indulging him so as to cause him to demand or expect too much when in reality there is no need for it. A spoilt child will grow up to become an irresponsible, prodigal and fake adult. Therefore, parents should take note of the following three major areas of a child’s needs.

  1. Attention: It is a good thing to give necessary and moderate attention to the children and their needs because through it, you get to know their feelings and what they are passing through. But pampering and over-solicitous attention will, no doubt, damage, limit and make them to become baby-adults who will lack self-confidence and self-reliance to face life’s reality. It has been observed in the pre-primary section that children to whom too much attention is given, take too long, and find it very difficult, to adapt to the reality of necessary and temporary daily separation caused by the school and the home.
  2. Materials: Providing material needs for the children is every parent’s responsibility. But parents must be very careful not to over indulge their children in unnecessary and expensive material things such as mobile phones, toys, clothes, shoes, etc because some children often identify their self-worth with such material acquisitions, especially when comparing themselves with their peers. Parents must show their children that their true value lies in their mental development and inner qualities such as honesty, kindness creativity and compassion rather than in material possession.
  • Money: Money matters in virtually everything these days. Nevertheless, parents can avoid future grief and financial difficulty by instilling good financial value in their children as early as possible. It is never too early for parents to start teaching the kids the value of money. Kids who learn how to manage money early will generally grow up to become self-sufficient adults. Parents can do this by setting good examples and show restraint and demonstrate the importance of hard work and effort towards earning a living. If we want our children to grow up to be financially responsible adults, we must teach them to understand the value of money and how to handle it from the childhood. One of the most precious gifts we can give to our children is the true independence they gain when they learn to earn a living. When they leave home, you can be confident that you have raised children who can stand on their own feet.
