GOF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS ABIDJAN: THE JOURNEY SO FAR

CONCEPTION

Whatsoever the Lord does stands forever; nothing can be added or taken away from it. The Lord has done great things for us; therefore, we are glad! (Psalm 126:3). Establishment of GOF Schools in Ivory Coast was orchestrated and birthed by divine appointments. It is an established fact that Cote d’Ivoire is second home to an average family in Ejigbo, Ejigbo Local Government of Osun State, Nigeria. And based on close interaction with the then natives living in Ivory Coast, the young directorate of GOF International Schools, Ejigbo (a school that came into existence in January 1986) realized that in Cote d’Ivoire, an average Nigerian child of Ejigbo origin terminated their formal education in Primary 5 or 6 and went back to the market to join their parents in business as further avenue to continue their education in an English-speaking school was practically non-existent. This informed the move to come to Abidjan to conduct common entrance exams for pupils to go to Nigeria and continue their secondary education at GOF College, Ejigbo.

But as laudable and well-embraced as the motive was, very few parents could follow it up with action because of the financial involvement. This led to the appeal that a branch of the school be situated in Ivory Coast to give their children the privilege of continuing their education within their vicinity. Hence, GOF International School took off on October 18, 1999 at Bromakoute Adjame with the first set of JSS1 students having earlier sat for the take-in Common Entrance Exam on May 29, 1999 at our ever friendly Islamic Primary School.

GROWTH

GOF International Schools Abidjan started primarily to bridge the gap and provide secondary education for school-age children of Nigerians living in Ivory Coast based on the Nigerian Curriculum of Education. The school took off with forty (40) students and four (4) teachers. With divine providence, the take-off set was housed at St. Bernard’s College where favour was granted the Directorate with the school owners who willingly and generously offered to share classrooms and offices with us and even allowed us access to their facilities such as library and laboratories thereby making the environment very conducive to learning.

The first Common Entrance Exam was participated in by students and co-ordinators from the following various existing primary schools in Cote d’Ivoire:
Baptist Day School, Adjame;
Islamic Primary School, Bromakoute, Adjame;
Baptist Day School, Marcony;
Baptist Day School, Abobo;
SB Lawal Memorial Primary School, Adjame;
St Martins International English School, Braccoli, Adjame;
Adetayo Children Day School, Williamsville;
St. Anthony Nursery & Primary School, Treichville; and,
A.U.D Primary School, Abobo.

The Chairman of this contributory body was our late father, Alhaji TA Oyolola while Mr. Ayanyemi J.O was the secretary. Also included in the body were some other important personalities and teachers who actively and immensely contributed to the founding of the college. They are as follows:
Alhaji Ghadamorsi Sulemon (Business man)
Alhaji Akinkumi Saheed (Then H.H. Islamic Primary School, Bromakote, Adjame)
Mr. O. Adagoke (The Proprietor, St. Anthony School, Treichelille)
Mr. Yuuti/HA (Then Assistant H.H Islamic Primary School)
Late Mr Akinwale (The Proprietor, Martins International School)

For effective and smooth running of the school, seven teachers were interviewed on Friday 15th October, 1999 out of whom four were eventually employed. Their names are as follows:
Mr. D.A Oyololo, Principal (The First Principal of the Nigerian Secondary School in Cote D’ Ivoire)
Mr.J.O Ayanyemi (Vice Principal)
Mr. Yuuti/HA (Administrative Officer/Accountant)
Mrs. Onl E. (Welfare Officer)

The school commenced her first term operation on Monday 18th October, 1999 and was officially launched with the four teachers and forty students in front of Bernard College at Bromakote, Adjame on Saturday 30th October 1999. The event was attended by important dignitaries.

The first term holiday came up on Thursday 16th December, 1999. The writing of the School’s second common entrance exam into Junior Secondary School was organized by GOF College Abidjan and held at Islamic Primary School, Bromakote, Adjame on Saturday 27th May, 2000.

The College’s first End-of-the-Year Program took place on Saturday, 15th July, 2000. Thereafter, the school organized a six-week holiday coaching program in August to September to further enhance the students’ knowledge. Upon resumption for the 2000/2001 academic year, the college had 56 students in both JSS1 and JSS2.

In the 2001/2002 academic year, the College moved from Saint Bernard’s College to Soma Samake, an Ivorian private primary school where some classrooms were released to us for use and it was at this new temporary site that the school wrote her first Junior Secondary School Certificate Examinations in June, 2003, a feat which many had initially thought would be impossible. Certain challenges affected the operations of the college at the new location and as a result, the school once again was moved to Williamsville from where it transferred to its present permanent site in Yopougon through the mercy and grace of God coupled with the doggedness and resilience of the founders.

After eight years of fruitful operations of the College, the management thought of opening its Nursery and Primary branch in Abidjan. So, in the second term of the 2007/2008 academic year, GOF Nursery and Primary School Abidjan was born on Monday 18th January, 2008. The Nursery/Primary arm of the school started with 15 pupils and three teachers namely, Mrs. P. Imaseun, Mrs. G. Obunadike and Mr. J.A. Adetayo (Head Master)

In January, 2005, the first set of the College students left for Nigeria to write their WAEC, NECO & JAMB exams respectively. They were nineteen in number and were led by the first Senior Prefect (Boy) of the school. Mr. Teslim Adeyemo (now a first-class graduate from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria and lecturing in one of the Nigerian universities) The 8th set of the college left for Nigeria on Sunday, 8th January, 2012 for their exams.

Meanwhile, the presence of GOF International Schools with its mission was officially endorsed by the Nigerian Embassy in Cote d’ Ivoire with registration number NEA/CA7/VOL-I dated 28th June, 2006. The School’s primary site was acquired at Yopougon and was authorized by the Ivorian Government with number 0800MEN/CAB/SAPEP dated 17th July, 2008.

It should be noted that our school was the first Nigerian school in Abidjan to write the Junior School Certificate Examination before other schools followed suit after our seventh edition. We have also graduated nine sets for West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examination Council (NECO) in our Mother Schools in Oshogbo and Ejigbo both in Nigeria with some of the students turning out with 1st Class Degree from their various Universities.

After twelve (12) years of hustling from one temporary site to another, the school moved to her permanent site at Yopougon, Ancien Bel-Air in August, 2010. The school thus became fully established on Thursday 1st of September, 2010 after closing down her temporary site of operation at Williamsville at Late Alhaji Elhaj Dibay’s residential property.

The Multi-purpose HALL of GOF International Schools was officially declared open on 19th April, 2016 by the Nigerian Ambassador, Her Excellency, Ambassador (Mrs) IFEDMA CHINWUBA AKABOGU. This was followed by the construction of HALL B in 2017. Equally, the expansion and the elevation of the Nursery and primary set to be commissioned today, 14th December, 2019 is to commemorate the 20th anniversary of GOF International Schools in Ivory Coast.

In this case, it is a clear marked Friday of every week for its sporting activities while the maiden edition of its Inter-House Athletics and Sports Competition was held on Thursday, 7th March, 2019.
