Pneumoconiosis is a generic name for the group of health problems arising from the inhalation of respirable lusts. The term pneumoconiosis may also literally mean dusty lungs and permanent alteration of lungs structure following the inhalation of organic and inorganic dusts present in the lungs.

 It has two types, according to their origin or source:

  1. Group A: Inorganic (or mineral) sources consist of silica, asbestos and coal dust (SAC)
  2. Group B: Organic sources consist of cotton dust (Byssinos) and sugar-cane dust (Bagasse).

Prevention

  1. Pre-wetting or wet drilling
  2. The use of exhaust ventilation
  3. Regular monitoring of respirable dusts
  4. Personal protection by using / wearing of protective gadgets e.g. masks, pressure hoods etc.
  5. Medical supervision and periodical examination of vulnerable groups.
  6. Engineering measures: Use good machines that may prevent the spread of dust.
